Dental prostheses

Dental prostheses

Prostheses are devices that are inserted into the mouth to replace the missing teeth of a person and to give support to the lips and cheeks. These devices are made from acrylic resin of the same color as the oral soft tissue of the patient as well as artificial teeth (plastics, porcelain or a combination of both).

Types of prostheses

There are two types of prostheses:

  • Conventional: This type of prosthesis is made once the teeth have been removed and can be placed in the mouth between eight to twelve weeks after extractions.
  • Immediate: This type of prosthesis is manufactured in advance, and it can be positioned immediately after dental extractions. This being said, the patient does not need to be without teeth during the healing time of his tissues. However, the tissues and alveolar bone tend to shrink during the healing period, which means that the immediate prostheses often need adjustments during this healing period. They are therefore often a temporary solution until the making of a conventional prosthesis. As well as artificial teeth (plastics, porcelain or combination of both).

Complete prosthesis fixed on implants

Device that replaces all the missing teeth when none of them is present in the mouth. It is screwed on implants and therefore only the prosthodontist can remove it without damaging it when necessary. You will have to perform hygiene care all around.

Removable prostheses

Removable partial denture

Apparatus that replaces one or more missing teeth and is anchored on some of the teeth present with hooks. It can rest partly on the gums. In popular jargon, we simply say “partial”. It must be removed for cleaning.

Removable full denture

Device that replaces all the missing teeth when none of them is present in the mouth. In popular jargon, it is simply a “denture”. It relies on the gums and must be removed for cleaning.

Removable complete prosthesis on implants

Device that replaces all the missing teeth when none of them is present in the mouth. In popular jargon, it is simply a “denture”. It can rely on the gums and implants or only on implants. It must be removed to be cleaned.
