Inlays et Onlays

Inlays et Onlays

Inlays and onlays are indirect restorations that are used when a large part of the masticatory surface of a tooth is damaged. These restorations can be made of porcelain, gold or composite resin. An inlay is placed inside a tooth while an onlay also covers the cusps of the tooth. Traditionally, gold has been the material of choice for these types of restorations, but in recent years porcelain has become more popular mainly because of its color and resemblance to the natural enamel of teeth.

The treatment

These types of restorations require two appointments. During the first, the prosthodontist removes the damaged parts of the tooth or the old restoration that is defective. The tooth is then prepared to accommodate the new restoration. An impression is taken and sent to the dental laboratory where the inlay or onlay will be made. A temporary restoration is of course put in waiting for the next appointment so that the patient can continue to function.

At the second appointment, the temporary restoration is withdrawn. The prosthodontist will then check if the new restoration fits well in the dental preparation, and will adjust it until its expectations as well as those of the patient are satisfied. The restoration is then glued to the tooth using an adhesive resin and the whole is finally polished.
